Dear Mr. Strauss and the members of the Class of 1972,
As I progress through my final year here at Princeton, I am once again writing to thank you and the Class of 1972 for your generosity. Without the Class of 1972 Memorial Scholarship, I would not be at Princeton. Scholarships such as this one are a great example of the amazing support that exists within the Princeton family, a type of support that I am only beginning to understand and that never seems to end.
The year has been an enjoyable one so far. Having completed all of my mechanical and aerospace engineering requirements except for two classes, I have spent the semester studying philosophy and history along with my lone engineering class. Next semester I will take two economics classes, one or two more philosophy classes and my final engineering class at Princeton (and ever, I believe). The hockey team continues to be my second family, and although we have had an up and down year, it has been enjoyable, as always.
During my last few months at Princeton, which are slowly winding to an end, I cannot help but think about the time that I have spent here, and the truly unique experience that it has been. I often find myself thinking of my freshman year, when, during my first week at Princeton, I listened to the people who had gone before me tell how great my time here was going to be. It was impossible then for me to truly understand what they meant. Perhaps it was impossible for them to truly explain it to me. The Princeton experience is something that words do little justice to; it is something that can only be lived. For everyone, the individual events that make up their time here are different, but they are all bound together by what I can only describe, cliché and all, as the Spirit of Princeton.
For those in the class that have not yet heard, next year I will be embarking on another adventure, as I will be headed to Oxford to pursue a second undergraduate degree in philosophy, politics, and economics. This will be made possible by another scholarship, the Rhodes Scholarship, of which I was selected a recipient on November 18. It is an exciting time for me, and as my days at Princeton wind down I can take solace in the fact that I will be entering another special learning community. However, I will never forget my time at Princeton, and most certainly I will never forget the Class of 1972.
Sincerely,
Landis Stankievech, '08
