New Eyes for the Needy

Our class began our relationship with this charitable organization in November of 2011.  Executive Committee Member Nikos Monoyios suggested New Eyes the Needy as a possible short term community service project in advance of our 40th reunion.  At that time, Nikos’ wife, Valery Brackett, was a member of the charity’s board and the charity is based in Short Hills, New Jersey, where Nikos and Val had lived for many years.  This personal familiarity and the simple model for our class participation---collecting used eyeglasses to be "recycled” by New Eyes to those unable to purchase eyeglasses—appealed to the Executive Committee, which approved the recommendation.
Our reunion coincided with the 75th anniversary of New Eyes for the Needy and by all accounts our participation was a success. As our 41st reunion approaches, our class has donated 880 sets of glasses to New Eyes for the Needy along with other, personal charitable donations.  In fact, the Class of 1972 has been instrumental in introducing this charity to the Princeton University Community in a way that will benefit them for several years.

It is likely that we will "ramp up” our class efforts for New Eyes for the Needy as we approach our 45th reunion.  Until then, if you would like to stay engaged, follow the link to discover how you can participate:
