Starboard at Midnight

Dear Classmates,

For those of you interested in the Titanic as we approach the centennial anniversary of its sinking, I wanted you to know that my wife, Lynn, has written a book about her grandparents, Helen Newsom and Karl Behr, both of whom survived the disaster.

Although not married at the time, Karl was courting Helen, as they said back in those days. The book is called Starboard at Midnight and is available on Amazon as both a printed book and as an e-book. (Just double-click on the bookcover image above to go there.)

The main focus of the book is Lynn's grandfather, as it chronicles his fascinating life. Besides surviving the Titanic and the guilt of being a male survivor, he was a nationally-ranked tennis player who played on several Davis Cup teams, was a runner-up at Wimbledon in doubles, and is in the Tennis Hall of Fame; a successful lawyer (He helped the survivors win their lawsuit against the White Star Line.) and businessman; and an ardent activist who worked with Teddy Roosevelt to promote preparedness for WWI, including organizing the largest civilian parade in NYC (175,000+ participants).

Any support is welcome, as all proceeds will benefit the Red Cross, who was there to meet and treat survivors when they finally reached NY on the Carpathia.
